The Brussels Government, initiated by State Secretary Karine Lalieux, has adopted new measures to facilitate the taxi sector's transition to zero-emission vehicles by January 1, 2027.

From January 1, 2027, all newly registered taxis must be 'zero emission'. To support this transition, the Government has decided to extend the lifespan of thermal vehicles from 7 to 9 years, and for electric, hydrogen, and PMR vehicles from 8 to 10 years. This provides operators with an additional two years to prepare for electrification.
In cases of temporary unavailability of a registered vehicle (accident, breakdown, theft), the use of a replacement thermal vehicle is extended from 3 to 6 months, renewable once for a maximum of 6 months. Furthermore, a general exemption from the 'zero emission' obligation is introduced for PMR taxis, considering the limited availability and higher cost of adapted electric vehicles.
Karine Lalieux emphasized that January 1, 2027, should not be a 'cliff edge' for taxi drivers. The new timeline aims to give the sector time, considering its economic reality and infrastructure needs. The goal is to maintain the electrification course while allowing operators to choose the opportune moment for investment.
To support this transition, the Region will accelerate the deployment of 100 to 150 fast and ultra-fast charging stations by the end of 2028. Measures are also planned to improve working conditions, including off-street parking, designated customer pick-up areas, and enhanced visibility for station taxis. A common visual identity and gradual access to certain bus lanes are being considered.
Currently, the Brussels Region has 3,129 taxis in circulation, comprising 2,430 thermal vehicles, 440 electric, 48 hydrogen, and 211 PMR, luxury, or vintage vehicles.
