The Municipality of Auderghem plans to transform Place de l'Amitié, currently mineral and prone to heat, into a cooling island and a meeting space.

Essentially mineral, the Place de l'Amitié is identified as one of the hottest areas in the territory, notably by a study from Bruxelles Environnement which designated it as a heat island. The overly mineralized layout accumulates solar energy, creating a thermal dome effect particularly felt during recent heatwaves.
The objective is to leverage the renovation project to make it the first cooling island in Auderghem. This will involve planting about thirty large trees and improving water management, retaining rainwater in more permeable soils instead of directing it to the sewers.
The project also includes the creation of a meeting space with pedestrian paths, a children's playground, benches, and about twenty bicycle parking spots. The speed limit will be set at 20 km/h. Surface parking has been adjusted following resident feedback.
The urban planning permit application has been submitted and could be issued in October. If all goes well, construction could begin in 2028.
